Development of a mathematical model for automated design of LAN cable routing

Olga Khristodulo, Vladislav Trubin

Abstract

Traditional methods of automated design of LAN cable routes rely primarily on minimizing the physical length of the path, neglecting engineering standards, installation costs, electromagnetic compatibility, and the semantics of the premises. This paper develops a mathematical model for multi-criteria optimization of low-current cable routes. The design space is discretized into a hybrid graph combining geometric reference points and semantic nodes at the boundaries of functional zones. For star topologies, an approximation of the Steiner problem is applied through a sequential search using a modified A* algorithm with dynamic edge weight updates. The model formalizes industry codes as a system of constraints and penalty factors, enabling the automatic generation of technically and economically feasible routes. The developed framework is ready for integration into BIM/CAD/GIS environments and reduces design time by minimizing manual route adjustments
