Ontologies as a Toolkit for Practical Analytics

Igor Ponkin

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study and explanation of ontologies as a complex toolkit for practical analytics. The author explains the place, meaning and scope of the relevant applicability of the specified tools. The article presents a number of clarifying points. The article provides an overview of the definitions and explanations of the concept of "ontology" presented in the scientific literature (as a tool). The author notes that a high degree of mismatch of meanings reflected in the definitions of different authors creates significant difficulties in understanding the concept under study. The article outlines important aspects of ontology as a complex analytical toolkit, through which its essence is revealed. The article notes that an example of the simplest modality of the ontology of a certain subject-object area is its basic thesaurus – well-composed and synchronized (within itself). The author presents his definition of the concept under study. The article outlines the areas of application of legal ontologies as tools. The article shows that ontologies as tools are potentially in demand in the following areas: 1) processing and extracting structuring and generally ordering and integrating the organization of legal information, 2) semantic indexing of legal information, 3) modeling legal actions, 4) standardization of normative onto-units and their complexes, 5) representation of legal and meta-legal knowledge in general, 6) design and development of information-legal, expert-legal and other systems. The use of instrumental ontologies provides ample opportunities to ensure competitiveness in the market of services and works of applied analytics, provides valuable opportunities for operating complex subject-object areas, especially in conditions of incomplete data and high dynamics of changes.
